British King calls for mechanisms to prevent "existential threats" of artificial intelligence to humanity - Sarmad

(KUNA) – King Charles III of the United Kingdom called on Thursday for global technology companies to establish adequate mechanisms and safeguards to prevent “existential threats” to humanity resulting from the misuse of artificial intelligence.

Speaking while hosting an artificial intelligence conference in Scotland, King Charles stated that the task facing AI developers is not limited to advancing technology alone, but also ensuring it remains firmly rooted in serving humanity, society, and the natural world.

In this context, he emphasized the importance of keeping humanity “sacred,” adding that the decisions being made now will shape the world in which future generations will live.

King Charles affirmed that the world is seeking reassurance from technology companies that “we will not lose control of our destiny or our lives amid rapid developments.”

He considered the development of artificial intelligence, in both its essence and pace, to be “a source of both great interest and deep concern,” warning that AI capabilities could be used in “catastrophic” ways, necessitating the imposition of adequate controls “before it is too late.”

In this regard, he pointed to the “urgent need to seriously consider the existential risks” associated with artificial intelligence falling into the wrong hands.

The conference was attended by the heads and representatives of several major global technology companies, particularly those leading in the field of artificial intelligence, including Google through its DeepMind division, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Anthropic.
