Egyptian President: Current developments in the region underscore the close interconnection between security and development - Sarmad
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi stated that the current developments in the Middle East and their negative impacts on the global economy, trade, energy flows, and supply chains underscore the close interconnection between security and development.
Mohamed El-Shenawy, the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Presidency, noted in a statement on Saturday that these remarks were made by President el-Sisi during his address at the BRICS Heads of State and Government Summit held in New Delhi, the Indian capital, under the theme “Comprehensive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateral Action.”
El-Sisi added that “given Egypt’s strategic location and its pivotal role in global trade, it recognizes the importance of maintaining stability and freedom of international navigation. Therefore, we must continue to build on the achievements within BRICS and leverage the capacities of our countries to establish specific projects and programs that support sustainable development goals, diversify growth sources, enhance productivity, and narrow development and technological gaps.”
He pointed out that in light of the growing challenges posed by debt and fiscal constraints, Egypt appreciates the efforts reflected in the BRICS economic and financial cooperation agenda to reform the international financial architecture and develop innovative and accessible financing tools, as well as strengthening the role of the New Development Bank and adopting its strategy for the period 2027–2031.
In this regard, he continued: “We hope that all these efforts will contribute to enhancing the response to the financing needs of member states.”
He emphasized that strengthening food security, water security, and energy security is of particular importance given the challenges faced by developing countries, including rising food and energy costs and supply chain disruptions, which highlight the need to adopt an integrated approach that accounts for the close interlinkages among these areas.
He added: “We appreciate the significant progress witnessed in the cooperation track in the fields of agriculture and environment, particularly in areas such as food security, sustainable agriculture, and sustainable water resource management.”
He noted that Egypt continues to work on developing a grain and logistics hub, which will support food security and enhance Egypt’s position as a regional center for trade and logistics.
He stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation on climate change and facilitating developing countries’ access to climate finance, while supporting a just and realistic transition to low-emission economies, taking into account differing circumstances, burdens, and development needs.
