26 Years After the Crime: Image of «Muhammad al-Durra» Enters Egyptian Educational Curricula - Sarmad

Twenty-six years after his martyrdom during the Al-Aqsa Intifada, the image of Palestinian child Muhammad al-Dura has resurfaced, this time on the pages of Egyptian educational curricula, as the world-shaking photograph was included in textbooks for a new generation of students.

Al-Dura was martyred on September 30, 2000, after cameras captured the moment he took cover alongside his father, Jamal al-Dura, before being struck by the occupation’s gunfire. The scene became one of the most iconic images associated with the Palestinian cause and the targeting of Palestinian children.

Egyptian curricula have brought al-Dura’s image back into educational memory more than a quarter-century after his martyrdom, ensuring his story reaches a generation that was not yet born when the incident occurred, keeping it present as part of Palestinian and Arab collective memory.

Jamal al-Dura, the father of the martyred child, expressed his pride in his son’s image appearing in the Egyptian Baccalaureate curriculum, describing the move as carrying profound human significance and reflecting the continued presence of the Palestinian cause in the consciousness of new generations.

In statements to Egyptian media, Jamal al-Dura said he viewed this step with a mixture of pain and pride, noting that his son’s image had become embedded in educational materials. He emphasized that Muhammad was martyred in full view of the world.

The martyr’s father addressed students in Egypt, urging them not to see Muhammad’s image merely as a relic of the past, but to remember the human being behind it, the pain his family endured, and the story of a people still searching for safety.

He stressed that the inclusion of Muhammad al-Dura’s story in curricula is not merely an honor for his family, but for every Palestinian child who was martyred, every family that lost its children, and everyone who carries the Palestinian cause in their memory and conscience.
