“Pink Noise” Enhances Brain Health During Sleep – Sarmad

A new study conducted by a team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States has shown that bursts of “pink noise” enhance brain health during sleep, leading to more restorative sleep and improved bodily activity in the morning.
According to their study, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, the researchers demonstrated that cerebrospinal fluid waves can be enhanced through exposure to short bursts of quiet sound, known as “pink noise,” which resembles static white noise during sleep. These bursts increase the amplitude of slow electrical brain waves during deep sleep periods, which in turn amplifies cerebrospinal fluid waves.
Waste products, such as lactic acid and damaged proteins, are known to accumulate in the brain during the day. When we sleep at night, cerebrospinal fluid waves help flush out these wastes, thereby promoting brain health.
Cerebrospinal fluid is a clear liquid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, acting as a protective cushion for both. In addition to shielding the brain from injury, it helps deliver nutrients—such as glucose—and removes waste products secreted by brain cells during energy consumption.
