Jordanian Army Foils Attempts to Smuggle “Half a Million Pills” Across the Border - Sarmad

The Jordanian Armed Forces announced the thwarting of four attempts to smuggle large quantities of narcotics across the Syrian-Jordanian border using guided balloons.

The Jordanian Armed Forces stated that the Eastern Military Zone succeeded, in the early hours of Wednesday, in foiling the four attempts on one of its border fronts, after border guard units detected the guided balloons at scattered locations, intercepted them, and brought them down within Jordanian territory.

The operation, carried out in coordination with military security agencies and the Drug Control Administration, resulted in the seizure of the balloons’ cargo, which amounted to approximately half a million drug pills, before the confiscated items were transferred to the competent authorities to take the necessary legal actions.

These attempts come amid ongoing drug smuggling operations from the Syrian side toward Jordanian territory, with smugglers resorting to new methods, including the use of electronically guided balloons, in an effort to bypass security measures and strict border surveillance.

The Jordanian Armed Forces emphasized that changes in smuggling methods and the development of their means would not deter border guard forces from continuing their duties, reaffirming their commitment to ongoing surveillance, monitoring, and firm action against all illegal activities on border fronts.
