Qatar Foreign Ministry Spokesman: Iran War Reveals Alliance with US Is Insufficient - Sarmad
Dr. Majid Al-Ansari, advisor to the Prime Minister and official spokesperson for the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on Monday that the war with Iran has revealed that a strategic alliance with the United States is insufficient.
Speaking at the Hayli Forum 2026 in Abu Dhabi, he explained that the conflict with Iran demonstrated that Gulf Arab states should not rely solely on their partnership with the United States for their security, according to Al Jazeera Net.
He emphasized that the war has subjected the region’s states to a real test of their alignment in perceiving threats, highlighting the importance of translating this awareness into cohesive collective action. He noted that Gulf security is a shared responsibility and that regional states must be a primary partner in shaping any arrangements concerning their security and future.
During his intervention in the forum’s main session, titled “The Complexities of the Gulf Security Architecture,” Al-Ansari addressed developments in the Gulf region and their implications for international security and stability. He pointed out that the current crisis’s repercussions are not limited to the region but extend to the global energy, trade, maritime navigation, and supply chain systems.
**Fragility of the Regional Security Architecture**
He indicated that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the disruption of navigation represent not only an economic challenge but a comprehensive issue affecting international security. He warned against the danger of using vital waterways as tools for pressure and noted the declining effectiveness of deterrence amid the low cost of disrupting trade and navigation.
The advisor to the Prime Minister and official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the main threat lies in normalizing the events the region has witnessed over the past months and treating them as a new reality rather than a temporary crisis. He added that the absence of international accountability for violations encourages their repetition and undermines the system of international security and stability.
He clarified that recent developments have exposed the fragility of the existing regional security architecture, which is primarily based on deterrence and defense. He highlighted the need to build a more resilient and sustainable system based on collective security, the activation of diplomacy, enhanced cooperation and coordination among Gulf states, deeper mutual economic dependence, and the protection of vital supply chains.
**Mediation Efforts**
Al-Ansari also outlined Qatar’s experience in mediation and its efforts to support dialogue tracks and peaceful solutions to conflicts. He affirmed that the success of any mediation depends on the political will of the parties involved and the existence of a shared interest in reaching a solution.
He added that dialogue does not mean taking sides but serves as a fundamental tool to prevent escalation, maintain communication channels, and achieve sustainable solutions. He stressed that addressing current challenges requires shared regional and international responsibility, as the repercussions of what is happening in the Gulf extend to the entire world.
On Monday, Dr. Al-Ansari participated in the main session of the third edition of the Hayli Forum 2026, held in Abu Dhabi under the theme “The Gulf at a Crossroads: Conflict, Repercussions, and Course Correction.”
