About 50 members of the U.S. military Joint Staff underwent polygraph tests as part of a broad and extraordinary investigation into the leak of classified information to journalists, including details about the depletion of U.S. ammunition stocks during the war with Iran, according to The New York Times.

According to the newspaper, the tests were conducted in August, following a series of media reports highlighting declines in key weapon inventories, including long-range missiles and Patriot missiles.

Investigators questioned officers and civilian employees of the Joint Staff about whether they had disclosed classified information to the media and whether they had conveyed information regarding the reduction of U.S. ammunition stocks, as reported by The New York Times.

The Joint Staff comprises between 1,500 and 2,000 officers and officials, and is responsible for coordinating operations, policies, and war plans with U.S. military leadership around the world.
