“Ingrid Alexandra” – Norway’s First Female Heir Apparent in 600 Years - Sarmad

Norwegian Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra took her constitutional oath “in writing” at the Royal Palace in Oslo, making her eligible to serve as regent in a historic step toward her eventual accession to the throne.

Following the accession of her father, Crown Prince Haakon, to the throne after the death of King Harald V at the age of 89, 22-year-old Ingrid Alexandra became the direct heir, becoming the first woman to head the line of succession in more than 600 years.

Norway is classified as a parliamentary constitutional monarchy, meaning the monarch’s powers are largely ceremonial and representative, while political and executive authority rests with the prime minister, the government, and the elected parliament.
