Washington and the 'European Troika' move to refer Iran to the UN Security Council - Sarmad

Diplomats said that the United States and its European allies—Britain, France, and Germany—are pushing to pass a resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors next week, which would notify the United Nations Security Council that Iran has violated its non-proliferation commitments.

According to diplomats who spoke to Reuters, Washington and the “European Troika” are seeking to include in the resolution a step paving the way for referring the Iranian file to the UN Security Council, based on the four countries’ assessment that Tehran has failed to comply with its nuclear obligations.

This anticipated move follows a resolution previously adopted by the IAEA Board of Governors on June 12, 2025, one day before Israel began its strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, with the United States joining the military operations shortly thereafter.

The June 2025 resolution concluded that Iran had violated its non-proliferation safeguards commitments, citing what the IAEA described as Tehran’s lack of full cooperation in investigations concerning traces of uranium found at Iranian sites not declared to the agency.
