Oman: Medical supplies airlifted by drone from Salalah to Al-Hulaniyat - Sarmad

(KUNA) — The second Gulf Green Mobility Forum in the Sultanate of Oman witnessed a practical trial of using drones to transport medical supplies and equipment as part of the second phase of the “Sky Bridge” initiative, covering the route from Salalah to the Hallaniyat Islands within the Dhofar Governorate.

The Omani Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology said in a statement on Wednesday that the mission was carried out by the “Sam” drone, which carried approximately 150 kilograms of medical supplies and equipment, covering the distance between Salalah and the Hallaniyat Islands at a speed exceeding 120 kilometers per hour and at an altitude of up to 2,000 meters.

It added that the second phase of the initiative aims to test and apply drone air cargo technologies and explore their potential in transporting supplies to remote areas, thereby enhancing the efficiency of transport and logistics systems and addressing challenges related to distances and geographical terrain.

It clarified that the trial is a practical application for using drones to transport supplies and study their potential in supporting medical and logistics services, responding to emergencies, and serving areas that are difficult to reach by conventional transport means.

It highlighted the importance of the trial in testing an integrated drone air cargo system that includes operation, navigation, cargo management, and safety, thereby providing practical indicators on the potential to expand the use of these technologies across various sectors.

The initiative, sponsored by Dhofar Governor Marwan Al Said, is part of the activities of the second Gulf Green Mobility Forum, which launched today to showcase modern technologies and solutions in the transport sector, including advanced air mobility technologies and ways to utilize them to develop more efficient and sustainable transport systems.

The first phase of the “Sky Bridge” initiative involved launching an air cargo of medicines and medical supplies weighing 100 kilograms, covering a distance of approximately 100 kilometers from the Technical Military College in Muscat to Al Jabal Al Akhdar.
