Keir Starmer Announces His Resignation from the British Parliament - Sarmad

Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his intention to step down as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras, a move that will trigger a by-election in the London constituency.

In comments to the Camden New Journal, Starmer said it had been a great honor to represent what he described as the country’s best constituency, and that he would focus in the coming period on international affairs, including defense, security, trade, and technology in a rapidly changing world, while continuing his work to combat violence against women and girls—a cause he began before becoming an MP and one he is proud to have continued.

Starmer affirmed that his legacy as an MP and prime minister would benefit his constituency in the future, particularly in areas such as affordable housing, education, and reducing knife crime. He noted that his decision came after careful consideration and that he would hand over the reins to his successor, while offering his full support to the current prime minister and the Labour government.

The resignation follows Labour’s loss of 1,496 council seats and 38 local councils in recent elections, historic defeats that have paved the way for challenges to Starmer’s leadership. Starmer assumed office in July 2024 after a landslide victory but has since faced a significant decline in popularity.

The Conservatives accused Starmer of “backing down” on previous commitments, arguing that his decision would impose costly by-elections on taxpayers. The Green Party also did not rule out nominating its leader, Zack Polanski, for the seat as a pathway to entering Parliament.
