OpenAI continues to rapidly expand ChatGPT’s capabilities, as competition in the artificial intelligence market shifts from developing models that provide better answers to building assistants capable of executing tasks, interacting with user applications, and operating with greater autonomy.
Over the past few days, the company has rolled out a series of new updates, highlighting three key features: the ability to generate images with transparent backgrounds, integration with Apple Messages on Mac devices, and the development of scheduled tasks that allow ChatGPT to carry out work at a later time.
Although these features serve different purposes, they reveal a clear direction for OpenAI toward making ChatGPT more integral to users’ daily tasks, rather than limiting it to a simple interface for asking questions and receiving answers.
**Images with Transparent Backgrounds**
One of the most notable additions has been made to its image generation tools, as the GPT-Image-2 model now supports the direct creation of images with transparent backgrounds.
This feature is particularly valuable for designers, content creators, and developers, as it allows for the creation of logos, icons, product images, or graphical elements with transparent backgrounds, ready to be seamlessly integrated into other designs.
Previously, generating an AI image often required an additional step to remove the background using a separate tool or service. With this new support, the resulting elements are better suited for use on websites, in advertising campaigns, in presentations, and in social media designs.
**ChatGPT Accesses Apple Messages**
In another update, OpenAI has opened a new avenue for ChatGPT to access user applications by adding support for Apple’s Messages app on Mac devices.
This integration enables ChatGPT to search and read within message conversations, including iMessage, SMS, and RCS messages, as well as compose and send messages.
This means that in certain scenarios, users will no longer need to copy long chains of messages and paste them into ChatGPT to request assistance. Instead, the assistant can access and interact with the relevant conversation directly, provided the necessary permissions are granted.
Users retain control over the sending process; by default, messages require user approval of both the text and the recipients before being sent.
The feature is available through the desktop ChatGPT app on Mac and can be used within ChatGPT Work and Codex.
**Tasks That Operate Without Waiting for the User**
The third change involves the development of the “Scheduled Tasks” system, which alters the traditional way of interacting with ChatGPT. Instead of opening the app each time and rewriting the same prompt, users can assign ChatGPT a task to be executed later or on a recurring basis.
For example, users can request periodic follow-ups on a specific topic, schedule a summary to be prepared at a set time, or set a reminder for a future task, with ChatGPT executing these actions according to the schedule defined by the user.
**From Answering to Executing**
These three features signal a new stage in the evolution of ChatGPT. The ability to generate images with transparent backgrounds brings it closer to a content production tool, access to Apple Messages connects it directly to user applications, and scheduled tasks empower it to continue working and fulfill requests in the future.
