Former Israeli Deputy: Peace Agreement with Egypt is Merely 'Ink on Paper' and Does Not Prevent War - Sarmad

A former Israeli lawmaker warned against relying on the peace agreement with Egypt, describing it as “a card that does not prevent war” should Egyptian interests change.

Former Israeli MK Eitan Roul, in a post on the platform “X,” stated that the peace agreement with Egypt is not a guarantee that Cairo will not wage war against Israel in the future, emphasizing that it is “merely a card” that remains valid as long as Egypt has no interest in violating it, and that it would not deter it if it decided that an attack had become viable.

Roul clarified that he does not advocate opening a front against Egypt, but he rejects viewing it as a controllable front or a strategic ally. He warned of the danger of its presence in both Gaza and Qatar, considering an assessment of relations based on an outdated peace agreement “incomplete and dangerous.”

Roul accused Egypt of a series of violations of the peace agreement and military expansion, as well as its failure to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Gaza, which he argued renders it unqualified to manage the Strip. This comes amid escalating Israeli disagreements over a potential Egyptian role in Gaza.
