Study: Stress gene remains active in schizophrenia patients - Sarmad

A study conducted by experts at the University of Sydney revealed that the gene responsible for regulating the body’s stress response is more easily activated in the brains of individuals with schizophrenia.
The study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry and conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, focused on the FKBP5 gene and its associated protein, FKBP51, which play a role in regulating the intensity of the body’s response to stress hormones such as cortisol.
Researchers found that gene activity increases due to changes in the chemical mechanisms that control its function, suggesting that a dysregulation of the stress response may be linked to certain changes occurring in the brains of people with schizophrenia.
The researchers also observed that these changes become more pronounced with age, particularly in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region associated with important functions such as memory, decision-making, and emotional regulation.
The study’s significance lies in identifying a new biological mechanism that can be studied as a potential target for future schizophrenia treatments. Understanding how the FKBP5 gene is regulated may help scientists explore ways to influence this mechanism in patients.
