American woman shoots her infant to prevent father from gaining custody, after police siege of her home - Sarmad

U.S. authorities in Wyoming charged a mother with killing her 11-month-old son after abducting him and transporting him to another state to prevent his father from obtaining custody.

Grant County police were able to track down Madeline Veronique Daley, 36, to a mobile home park near Silver City, after an arrest warrant surfaced during a background check when she applied for a job.

Daley had taken her infant son, Basil Stoner, from Wyoming to New Mexico, in violation of a court order granting his father emergency custody.

Police surrounded the mobile home Daley had entered and waited for a search warrant to be obtained before entering, when officers heard a single gunshot. Upon entering the premises, they found that Daley had shot Basil in the face with a 9mm pistol, killing him, while she attempted to turn the gun on herself. Officers subdued her.

After her arrest, Daley told investigators that she believed she was preserving her son’s “safety,” and that killing the child “was worth it” if it would prevent his father and relatives from seeing him.

Daley stated that she abducted her son because she did not want him to travel back and forth between Nebraska and Wyoming twice a month, when he was 8 months old. When investigators asked what she was thinking when she saw the police approaching, she replied, “Jake won’t get Basil.”

She also alleged, without providing evidence, that the child would have been in danger and subjected to sexual abuse if she had left the mobile home with him, and that his father did not want any relationship with him, whether financial, physical, or emotional.

Daley recently pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and faces the maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
