Nepal: Flood death toll rises to 469 amid fears of new flash floods - Sarmad

Nepal’s police said on Friday that the death toll from floods that struck the country earlier this week had risen to 469, as rescue teams continued to search for survivors in the valleys and foothills of the Himalayan region.

Nepal and China, both affected by the sudden floods, warned of the risk of new flooding that could result from water accumulation.

The two countries reported that a glacial collapse on Wednesday morning triggered a massive surge of rocks, ice, mud, and debris through the river systems in the Himalayas, sweeping away villages and critical infrastructure on a road linking Kathmandu with Lhasa in Tibet, which was crowded with tourists and visitors.

The enormous volumes of water and debris carried by the floods signal the threat of another disaster. Nepal’s Disaster Management Authority warned of rising water levels in a lake formed by a river blocked by debris at the flood site, raising fears of another flood.
