(KUNA) – Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz expressed his hope that the election of former Mauritanian Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) would contribute to strengthening the unity and effectiveness of the Organisation, serving the causes and interests of the Islamic Ummah, and realizing the aspirations of its peoples.
In a statement issued by the Mauritanian Presidency, President Ould Abdel Aziz conveyed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the leaders of sister and friendly countries for the support, confidence, and backing accorded to Mauritania’s candidate for the post of OIC Secretary-General, describing his election as “an important diplomatic success.”
Earlier in the day, the Mauritanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that the unanimous election of Ould Cheikh Ahmed as OIC Secretary-General crowned the standing and trust Mauritania enjoys as a result of its “moderate and balanced” diplomatic approach.
Ould Cheikh Ahmed was elected Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation by consensus of the member states during the 23rd extraordinary session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, held today in the city of Jeddah.
