Oman and Iran discuss a transitional framework for establishing a temporary joint corridor through the Strait of Hormuz - Sarmad

The Oman News Agency reported that the statement indicated that the Foreign Minister’s talks with his Iranian counterpart in Tehran were constructive and focused on the importance both countries attach to resuming safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, in a manner that safeguards their sovereignty and sovereign rights.

It added that the two ministers discussed a phased framework that would provide a practical and implementable basis, given the current situation in the strait resulting from the recent war and its tragic repercussions. The proposed framework includes establishing a temporary joint navigation corridor through the Strait of Hormuz and agreeing to implement a joint project to clear the strait of mines.

Technical negotiations between the two sides will continue with the aim of reaching an agreement on a permanent navigation corridor and future arrangements for the management of the strait, along with establishing a mechanism for information exchange and the management of navigation traffic, and providing related navigational and security services.

Both sides emphasized the importance of holding joint discussions with the Gulf-coastal states of the region, and stressed the necessity of adhering to the provisions of international law and respecting the sovereign rights of coastal states.
