A well-informed source revealed that the U.S. Treasury Department intends to expand the scope of secondary sanctions to include entities and countries that still maintain commercial ties with Iran.

The source, in a statement to Reuters on Monday, explained that this move serves as a final warning to nations to sever their commercial relations with Iran, aiming to end the ongoing conflict that has disrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and hindered energy exports from the Gulf region for approximately six months.

The source added that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will present a comprehensive vision of the economic campaign against Iran during a press conference today, describing it, along with U.S. President Donald Trump, as an “economic victory day.”

The source emphasized that countries must choose between aligning with Washington or facing the risk of having their major companies and entities isolated from the U.S. dollar-based global financial system.

For his part, Bessent expressed his determination to tighten the economic noose around Iran. In an opinion piece published in the Financial Times on Sunday, he wrote, “At dawn begins the day of the greatest economic landing in the history of financial wars waged against an adversary.”

He echoed Trump’s threats, stating, “Our goal is to cut off every lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime, leaving it in total isolation.” He claimed that “the U.S. military has significantly dismantled Iran’s military capabilities and weakened its nuclear program, and we are now entering the final phase.”

In his article, Bessent argued that “Trump has dealt a fatal blow to the Iranian economy, pushing the rial to its weakest levels and driving inflation to unprecedented heights.” He considered that “the regime now resorts only to self-deception, hoping that appeasement toward the aggressor will yield lasting peace.”
