U.S. Treasury: We launched the “Economic Outcast” operation against Iran - Sarmad
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that Washington, under the direction of President Donald Trump, had launched an economic campaign targeting Iran and its supporters.
The measures include sanctions against companies and vessels linked to what Washington describes as Iran’s “shadow fleet” in the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, and Switzerland, as well as the suspension of general licenses that had allowed certain financial transfers to Iran.
The sanctions also targeted 60 entities, individuals, and a ship linked to Iran in the fields of nuclear energy, missiles, and oil, in a move the US Treasury said was part of a broader campaign aimed at cutting off revenue sources and activities associated with Tehran.
In an article published by the Financial Times, the US Treasury Secretary stated that Washington would begin on Monday an unprecedented financial offensive against Iran, aimed at cutting off the revenue streams that support the Iranian regime.
He clarified that the US measures were designed to close economic pathways for countries with interests tied to Tehran, while hinting at expanding financial isolation to include any country that acts, in US terms, as a financial lifeline for Iran.
The campaign also includes diplomatic efforts, with Bessent saying that the US president is holding discussions with global leaders to sever economic ties with Iran.
In the military context, the US Treasury Secretary warned that any military action targeting US forces or Gulf states would be met with a direct and decisive response from President Trump.
Trump had previously vowed to deliver crushing blows to the Iranian economy, as the United States, the United Nations, and the European Union had imposed sanctions on Tehran, alongside trade bans and the freezing of Iranian assets.
Since the outbreak of the war against Iran on February 28, Washington has imposed additional sanctions on Tehran targeting the maritime shipping, energy, and financial sectors, and has also imposed a naval blockade.
