U.S. envoy to Syria Tom Barrack said that his remarks characterizing Israel’s control over the Syrian Golan Heights as an “occupation and a violation of UN resolutions” were a description of a well-known historical context, emphasizing that U.S. policy had not changed.

Barrack had said on Saturday that Israel continues to occupy the Syrian Golan, describing the situation as contrary to UN resolutions and all international agreements affirming that the Golan is Syrian territory. This stance appeared to contradict the position of President Donald Trump’s administration, which recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan in 2019.

The comments were initially seen as an indicator of a shift in U.S. policy that had been in place for decades, before Barrack returned to clarify his intent, aligning with the White House’s policies.
