U.S. President Donald Trump said he would be happy to run for a third presidential term, expressing regret over current restrictions.

Trump told supporters in South Carolina: “Unfortunately, we have some rules and regulations that prevent someone from running (for a third term). If they want to change that, I would be very happy.”

The next U.S. presidential election is scheduled for 2028. Nevertheless, the current U.S. president has repeatedly hinted at the possibility of running for a third term, stating that there are “ways” for him to do so. This comes despite the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which stipulates that no person may be elected to the office of President more than twice, with each term lasting four years. Trump’s current tenure is his second term.

One of the only ways to change this situation is to amend the Constitution itself, a process that requires approval by two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, followed by ratification by three-fourths of the states (38 states).

Although Republican Representative Andy Ogles proposed an amendment in January 2025 that would allow for three non-consecutive presidential terms, the chances of this amendment succeeding appear slim amid sharp political divisions.
