Turkey: We will firmly continue to support Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity - Sarmad

(Anadolu Agency) – Turkish Ministry of Defense spokesperson Zeki Ak Turk confirmed that Turkey will firmly continue its efforts and contributions aimed at preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and assisting it in achieving a stable and secure structure.

During his weekly press conference on Thursday, Ak Turk clarified that Turkey’s priority lies in preventing the region from being drawn into further conflicts and instability, and in consolidating lasting peace and security.

He stated in this regard: “In this context, our efforts and contributions aimed at preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and helping it achieve a stable and secure structure, will continue firmly.”

Ak Turk called on the international community to take “more tangible and effective measures” in response to Israel’s moves that threaten regional peace and stability.

He stressed that “it must never be allowed to become entrenched that Israeli military interventions against neighboring countries are normal and acceptable.”

He emphasized the necessity of building the region’s future on a security concept based on international law and respect for states’ sovereignty and territorial integrity, rather than on unilateral use of force.

He noted that Israel continues its attacks and military activities in southern Lebanon despite the signed framework agreement, and targets Syria’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and cohesion.

On Tuesday morning, the Israeli Air Force launched eight strikes on the runway of Abu al-Dhaher Air Base in Idlib province, northwestern Syria, causing damage to its infrastructure.

In this context, sources in the Turkish Ministry of Defense confirmed that there was no Turkish military presence at Abu al-Dhaher Air Base in Syria, either before or during the Israeli attack on the base.

Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, 2024, Israel has expanded the scope of its attacks across Syria, targeting weapons and missile depots and strategic military facilities.
