"Mesh Weaving" Workshop: A Creative Fusion of Threads and Ornamentation at the "Cultural Summer 18" Festival - Sarmad

(KUNA) – Threads are transformed into vibrant, colorful canvases adorned with intricate patterns at the “Mesh Weaving” workshop, held in collaboration with the Bayt Al-Saddu and presented by Abila Al-Filakawi and Amal Al-Shatti as part of the “Cultural Summer 18” festival organized by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Tuesday, Al-Filakawi explained that mesh weaving relies on using iron mesh and embellishing it with threads, whether wool or cotton, by executing designs primarily based on the square unit. She noted that these units can be arranged into various patterns, such as triangles, squares, or interwoven motifs.

She added that participants learn the fundamentals of this art form during the workshop and then apply them practically by selecting and coordinating a range of colors to suit the intended placement of the piece. The final product can take the form of an artistic panel used as a decorative or personal item.

Al-Filakawi highlighted that the beauty of mesh weaving lies in the potential to develop the concept further, enlarge the mesh size, and utilize it in diverse applications. She pointed out its versatility, noting its use in furniture pieces such as chairs, as well as in various vessels and decorative elements.

She emphasized that the workshop begins by teaching participants the basics and simple techniques, then provides them with creative freedom to innovate. This allows each participant, building upon the learned units and squares, to create new forms and achieve diverse, aesthetically pleasing results.

The workshop aligns with efforts to promote the arts and crafts, offering participants an opportunity to discover their creative skills through hands-on experience and strengthening their connection to traditional crafts and methods of incorporating them into contemporary artistic works.
