Thai Park Allows Free Entry for Palestinians and Bans Israelis - Sarmad

A private zoo on the Thai island of Koh Samui has sparked widespread controversy after reports circulated about signs welcoming Palestinians into the park free of charge, while barring Israelis from entry. The situation escalated after Thai authorities intervened to contain the crisis following the denial of entry to an Israeli family.

The incident occurred on August 12, when an Israeli couple stated that they and their two children were prevented from entering the Samui Rare Animals Zoo on Koh Samui, according to the Bangkok Post.

This coincided with reports of signs inside the zoo displaying messages welcoming Palestinians and offering them free admission, alongside a notice prohibiting Israelis from entering. These developments raised questions about the background of the decision and whether it was linked to political stances regarding the war in the Gaza Strip.

The matter later prompted government intervention. Deputy Interior Minister Polapob Suwanchai announced that the ministry would work to resolve the dispute between the zoo owner and the Israeli family, noting that he had discussed the incident with the governor of Surat Thani province, which administratively oversees Koh Samui.

The Thai official stated that he would cooperate with relevant authorities to take necessary measures to settle the disagreement, amid growing attention to the case.

Reports also indicated that the zoo’s operator received threats following news of the ban on Israeli entry, adding a security dimension to the issue and prompting authorities to monitor developments closely.

Koh Samui, located in the Gulf of Thailand, is one of the country’s most prominent islands and tourist destinations, attracting large numbers of foreign visitors. Consequently, any incident involving discrimination based on nationality or political positions draws significant attention.

The incident occurs as the repercussions of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip continue to resonate internationally, with debates over the conflict extending to various sectors, including tourism and cultural and sporting events. This takes place against a backdrop of sharp divergence in public and official attitudes toward Israel and the Palestinians.

With the involvement of Thailand’s Ministry of Interior, the case is now with local authorities seeking to resolve the dispute. Details regarding potential measures against the zoo management or the legal basis for denying the Israeli family entry remain unclear.
