Afghanistan calls on the United States to reopen the U.S. Embassy in Kabul - Sarmad

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has called on the United States to reopen its embassy in Afghanistan.

In an interview with The New York Times, Muttaqi said, “We believe the chapter of war has closed, and now we want relations based on mutual respect and a new chapter of effective engagement.”

He added that the United States could “reopen the embassy and maintain a diplomatic presence and investment.”

The United States withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, ending its 20-year presence in the country.

Coinciding with the U.S. withdrawal, the Taliban took control of Kabul in August of that year and later formed a new government in Afghanistan.
