Ukrainian company develops sensors to detect Russian “Shahed” drones - Sarmad

Ukrainian defense and aerospace systems manufacturer Zvook announced that, during the NATO BATT26 exercise, it installed acoustic early-warning sensors—relying on the capture and analysis of drone sounds—on a moving vehicle for the first time, in cooperation with the Latvian National Armed Forces, to test whether the detection system, originally designed for fixed installations such as communication towers, can perform with the same efficiency while in motion on roads.

The company’s technology relies on listening rather than transmitting, identifying drones through the distinctive acoustic signatures of their engines and propellers, rather than emitting radar signals that could reveal the defenders’ positions to enemies equipped with anti-radiation weapons, according to Defense Blog.

This approach has made the system one of the most prominent elements of Ukraine’s locally deployed air defense infrastructure under surveillance, since the company’s sensors began operating on Ukrainian frontlines in 2022.

Zvook continued to develop this technology throughout the war, including a compact tactical version specifically designed to detect FPV drones equipped with fiber-optic guidance, which have become a key weapon in the conflict and are extremely difficult for radio-frequency detection systems to track.
