3.9-magnitude earthquake strikes northern Iraq regions - Sarmad

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck areas between Kirkuk Governorate and Chamchamal District in the Sulaymaniyah Governorate of northern Iraq today, causing no casualties or material damage.

The Iraqi General Authority of Meteorology and Seismology stated that its observatories recorded the tremor at a depth of 9 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface, noting that its epicenter was located near the village of Zanjan, which belongs to the Sinaka sub-district, between Kirkuk and Chamchamal in northern Iraq.

The authority added that residents of Kirkuk, Chamchamal, and surrounding areas felt the quake, sparking panic among some locals and prompting several residents to leave their homes as a precaution. No damage has been reported by the relevant authorities so far.

The earthquake comes amid noticeable seismic activity in Kirkuk Governorate and its surrounding areas. The General Authority of Meteorology and Seismology recorded 20 earthquakes over four days at the beginning of August, with most epicenters concentrated in the east and northeast of the governorate, toward Chamchamal District.
