Kuwaiti for Development Signs $2 Million Grant Agreement with World Food Programme - Sarmad

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a grant agreement with the World Food Programme (WFP) today, Thursday, valued at US$2 million, to help finance the construction and improvement of food storage facilities in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum.

In a press release, the Fund stated that the project aims to provide and enhance the necessary storage capacities for dry food aid in areas suffering from a severe shortage of storage facilities, by rehabilitating several existing structures and constructing new ones, with a total storage capacity of approximately 59,000 metric tons.

It added that these facilities are expected to contribute to securing food aid, improving storage operations, and facilitating distribution, thereby supporting the WFP’s efforts to reach approximately 7.5 million beneficiaries.

The project comprises several key components, including the construction of permanent storage facilities, such as steel warehouses and cold storage facilities, as well as the development of supporting infrastructure for facilities, offices, and security installations.

The project also includes the installation, fixing, and securing of 15 mobile storage units on concrete foundations, along with the establishment of a dedicated workshop for the WFP fleet, aimed at supporting preventive maintenance and repair works, and enhancing the operational readiness of logistical assets.

Furthermore, the project involves allocating additional space to accommodate other United Nations agencies and cooperating partners, thereby strengthening coordination and collaboration within the framework of inter-agency operations.

The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development stated that this grant is part of its partnership with the WFP, which was strengthened by the signing of a memorandum of understanding in February 2025, aimed at supporting cooperation in the fields of food security, humanitarian aid, and development projects, and enhancing the capacity to address challenges faced by communities affected by food insecurity.

The grant agreement was signed by Rashid Al-Badr, Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, and Omar Al-Eissa, WFP Country Director in Kuwait.
