Study: Adding fruit juice to the diet may alleviate symptoms of depression - Sarmad

A recent study conducted by researchers at the UK’s Newcastle University found that adding one daily cup of 100 percent natural fruit juice or a fruit smoothie to a healthy diet may be associated with reduced symptoms of depression among adults who consume small amounts of fruits and vegetables.

According to Science Daily, the randomized trial lasted four weeks and involved 42 participants, who were divided into three groups. Two of the groups were asked to increase their fruit and vegetable intake to five servings per day, while one of these groups also added a cup of fruit juice or a fruit smoothie to their diet.

Results published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed that participants who consumed the juice or smoothie alongside whole fruits and vegetables recorded a reduction in depression symptom scores compared to the control group, with a decrease of 2.52 points on a 27-point scale.

Fiber intake increased by approximately 8 to 10 grams per day in both intervention groups. The study found no adverse effects on metabolic health indicators among participants who consumed the juice or smoothies during the follow-up period.

Researchers assessed participants’ mood using validated questionnaires designed to measure symptoms of depression and anxiety, aiming to track changes in their psychological state throughout the study period.

The researchers noted that these preliminary findings require further investigation with larger sample sizes and longer durations to confirm the relationship between increased fruit and fruit derivative consumption and improved depression symptoms.

Dietary guidelines in several countries recommend daily consumption of fruits and vegetables as part of a balanced diet, due to their content of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that may contribute to overall health.
