Trump signs executive order banning 'birth tourism' for U.S. citizenship - Sarmad

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning tourism to the country, aiming to prevent “birth tourism” for the purpose of securing U.S. citizenship for children born in the United States.

Trump told reporters at the White House: “Hundreds of thousands of people have abused the constitutional amendment granting unconditional citizenship to children born in the United States.”

The U.S. president did not specify how the signed order would be implemented.

U.S. authorities have long sought to curb this practice, as travelers often declare tourism as the purpose of their visit, while in reality arriving solely with the intention of giving birth to acquire citizenship for their child.

On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked Trump’s initiative to end the principle of birthright citizenship for children born in the country.

The U.S. Department of Justice warned that entering the United States on a tourist visa with the sole purpose of giving birth violates federal law.

Authorities have pledged to prosecute organizers of such schemes.
