Erdogan: Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan Based on Collective Deterrence Principle, Not Targeting Any Specific Country - Sarmad
The President of Turkey confirmed that the agreement with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan is based on the principle of collective deterrence and will contribute to enhancing security and defense cooperation, as well as developing joint projects in the defense industry and counter-terrorism.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated in a social media post: “Today, I visited Mecca at the gracious invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. During my visit, I met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.”
Erdogan added, “On this occasion, we signed a joint defense agreement,” further noting that “this agreement, based on the principle of collective deterrence, will contribute to strengthening our security and defense cooperation and developing joint projects in the defense industry and counter-terrorism.”
The Turkish President stated that the agreement, which also recognizes the right of self-defense as stipulated in Article 51 of the UN Charter, emphasizes that it is not directed against any specific country and is open to participation by all countries seeking peace, prosperity, and stability in the region.
Erdogan reiterated Turkey’s steadfast commitment to resolving conflicts and crises through dialogue and diplomacy, based on respect for international law and in line with its vision of regional sovereignty.
The Turkish President expressed his hope that his visit to the Kingdom, along with the consultations and the signed agreement, would bring blessings to the entire region.
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey announced on Friday the signing of the “Mecca Joint Defense Agreement,” a move described as reflecting a commitment to enhancing regional security and collective deterrence against any threats.
A joint statement issued by the three countries emphasized that the “Mecca Joint Defense Agreement” reflects the shared commitment of the three nations to strengthen their collective security, promote peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond, and strive toward a secure and prosperous future.
The statement clarified that the agreement aims to enhance collective deterrence against any act of aggression, stipulating that any armed attack against any of the three countries shall be considered an attack against all of them, and it also calls for strengthening all aspects of defense cooperation among the three nations.
