US President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday morning that Iran would be “severely struck” unless the Strait of Hormuz is reopened “very soon.”

Trump added in an interview with Fox News, during a visit to California, that “we are having very good discussions,” emphasizing that Iran is keen to reach an agreement that would put an end to months of conflict.

Analysts say Trump’s statements about “striking with an iron fist” against Iran have become meaningless, as they have been repeated without resulting in any decisive military action.

The US Axios website reported on Wednesday morning that the United States, Iran, and the Sultanate of Oman have come close to reaching a temporary agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with the US aiming to announce it today, according to two regional sources and a US official.

The site added that this deal, which has been under negotiation for several weeks, aims to resume a ceasefire between the US and Iran and restart negotiations on a nuclear agreement.

President Donald Trump had decided on Saturday not to carry out his threats of launching a wide-ranging bombing campaign, allowing more time for diplomacy. However, if no agreement is reached soon, Trump may give the green light for major military strikes.

Axios added that the emerging agreement would meet some of Iran’s demands for increased control over traffic in the Strait of Hormuz—a level of control it did not possess before the war.
