Study: Brain alters activity patterns as tinnitus becomes chronic - Sarmad

A recent scientific study revealed that the brain reorganizes its activity patterns as tinnitus transitions from an acute to a chronic condition, changes that may represent an adaptive mechanism helping sufferers cope with the persistent auditory sensation.
According to ScienceAlert, the study, conducted by researchers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University in China and published in the journal iScience, showed clear differences in brain activity between individuals with acute tinnitus and those with chronic tinnitus. Elevated activity was recorded in brain networks responsible for identifying important stimuli among those with recent-onset tinnitus, while activity patterns appeared more stable among those who had suffered for a longer period.
The study included 45 participants without obvious hearing loss, including 15 with acute tinnitus lasting less than six months, 15 others with chronic tinnitus lasting more than six months, and a control group. Electroencephalography (EEG) was used to analyze neural network activity during rest.
The results indicated that tinnitus is not limited to its effects on the auditory system but is associated with widespread changes in brain activity. In the early stages, the brain is more responsive to the phantom auditory sensation before reorganizing its neural activity as the condition persists.
These findings could contribute to the development of therapeutic approaches targeting the different stages of tinnitus, tailored to the changes in brain activity that occur as the condition progresses.
