British warning of food shortages due to record heatwave - Sarmad

The National Farmers’ Union in the United Kingdom has warned that the ongoing heatwave and drought could lead to a sharp shortage of food supplies, amid alerts that some regions have not seen any rainfall for more than a month.

Tom Bradshaw, president of the National Farmers’ Union, has urged British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to take emergency measures, including offering tax incentives to farmers to build water storage tanks, in an effort to mitigate the drought’s impact on the agricultural sector.

The Mirror newspaper quoted Bradshaw as saying that farmers are struggling to maintain their crops amid extreme temperatures, warning that continued drought conditions could lead to food supply shortages.

The UK Environment Agency has declared a drought in half of England’s territory, with the southeast experiencing its longest rainless period in 30 years, according to the UK Met Office. The UK previously recorded a record-breaking heatwave in June, with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius.
