Iraqi Prisons Turn into Classrooms - Sarmad

The Iraqi Ministry of Justice announced that 639 inmates participated in literacy, accelerated education, and formal education programs in correctional facilities for the 2025–2026 academic year.

The ministry confirmed in a statement its continued support for university-level education programs, noting that “92 inmates are continuing their studies at accredited university educational centers, with 46 of them enrolled at the University of Al-Ayn’s University Education Center inside Al-Nasiriya Central Prison.”

The statement added that inmates “are distributed across departments of physical education and sports science, English language, and law,” highlighting that “46 other inmates are studying at the College of Business Informatics, affiliated with the University of Information and Communications Technology, within the University Education Center/Karkh at the Eighth Rastafa Parking facility.”

The ministry clarified that its educational programs “aim to make education a fundamental pillar of rehabilitation and reintegration programs, enabling inmates to continue their educational journeys,” while also contributing to “preparing inmates for reintegration into society.”
