Al-Sharaa: We are working to reach a security agreement with Israel with the participation of several countries - Sarmad

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said in an interview with Al Jazeera that his country is working to reach a security agreement with Israel, with the participation of a group of countries, expressing his concern over the widening scope of war in the region.

Al-Sharaa added, “We avoid confrontation with Israel, as it is not in our interest to do so. We are working to reach a security agreement with Israel, involving a group of countries. If this security agreement with Israel succeeds, it will pave the way for comprehensive peace without Syria relinquishing its right to the occupied Golan.”

Al-Sharaa stated that Syria does not intend to carry out any military intervention in Lebanon, adding that they are seeking solutions with the Lebanese government to help steer Lebanon to safety.

He noted that “the solution in Lebanon is not necessarily security-related, and we are working on a comprehensive approach to the crisis,” considering that “any chaos in Lebanon would directly impact Syria.” He emphasized that “Damascus supports the Lebanese state’s monopoly on arms and its authority over decisions of war and peace.”

He pointed out that there has been a delay in implementing the agreement with the Kurds, but “we still place our hopes on it,” according to him, noting that “a committee has been formed to manage the file of the missing, in accordance with international standards and in cooperation with experienced countries.”

On another note, Al-Sharaa considered that lifting economic sanctions would not be effective without Syria’s removal from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

President Al-Sharaa affirmed that Syrian-Iraqi relations are experiencing continuous improvement.
