Yemeni Government: Coalition for Legitimacy Support's Response to the Houthis Complies with International Law - Sarmad

The Yemeni government condemned on Saturday, in the strongest terms, the “terrorist attack launched by the Houthi terrorist militias on a commercial vessel in the Red Sea,” affirming that “this new criminal escalation confirms the militias’ determination to undermine all regional and international efforts aimed at de-escalation, and to drag Yemen into conflicts that have no bearing on the interests of its people.”

In a statement, the government pointed out that “the firm military response by the coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen came within the framework of joint efforts to combat terrorism, protect international navigation, secure sea lanes, and deter criminal activities targeting civilian ships, in full compliance with international law and the principles of necessity and proportionality, after taking all necessary precautions to spare civilians and infrastructure from any harm.”

The government highlighted the “high precision characterizing the deterrence operation, which was limited to legitimate military targets linked to the terrorist threats posed by the Houthi militias, with full adherence to the provisions of international law and the adoption of all necessary precautions to protect civilians and civilian objects.”

The government affirmed that “Yemeni ports, including the port of Hodeidah, continue to receive commercial ships and humanitarian supplies in a normal manner, without suffering any damage, reflecting the coalition supporting legitimacy’s commitment to protecting civilian infrastructure and ensuring the continued flow of goods, food, and fuel, without harming citizens’ interests or international trade.”

The Yemeni government noted that “this terrorist escalation once again reveals that the Houthi militias continue to openly gamble with the interests and national resources of the Yemeni people to serve the Iranian regime’s agendas and improve its bargaining position, by using the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait as leverage against the regional and international communities.”

It also affirmed that “the Yemeni state will continue, in coordination with the coalition supporting legitimacy and regional and international partners, to take all necessary measures and steps to protect civilians, uphold the sovereignty of the Republic of Yemen, secure international navigation, ensure the continued operation of Yemeni ports and the flow of trade and humanitarian supplies, and deter any threat to national or regional security. It will not allow Yemeni territory to be transformed into a platform for threatening its neighbors and international maritime security.”

The government placed “full responsibility for the humanitarian, economic, and security repercussions stemming from the continuation of this destructive approach on the Houthi terrorist militias.”

It also called on “the international community to adopt a firmer stance against this terrorist group, cut off its sources of funding and arms, hold its supporters accountable, thereby preserving the security and stability of the region and safeguarding shared international interests.”
