Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced that the death toll from the Ebola outbreak has risen to 1,309 among 2,973 confirmed cases, representing a case fatality rate of 44%.

This comes amid a worrying acceleration in the spread of the epidemic, which observers have described as the fastest in the country’s history.

According to field reports, medical staff have gone on strike to protest the delayed payment of financial bonuses, causing near-total paralysis at the “Elicya” Ebola treatment center in the city of Bunia, as the outbreak expands to cover several provinces in the eastern and northeastern regions of the country.

Cases are concentrated in Ituri Province, which remains the main epicenter of the epidemic, as well as in North Kivu and other areas. International health agencies have warned that official figures may understate the true scale of the outbreak due to logistical and security challenges that hinder contact tracing.
