Spain declares national emergency in Madrid as wildfires spread - Sarmad

The Spanish government announced a national state of emergency in the Madrid region on Friday following the simultaneous outbreak of several wildfires, which spread rapidly due to strong winds and high temperatures.

Spanish state television quoted the Spanish Ministry of the Interior as saying that the declaration of a state of emergency in the capital region came in the wake of two fires that broke out there, and a third fire that spread into the area from Toledo province in the Castilla-La Mancha region, along with fears that a fire in Ávila province, part of the Castilla y León region, might also spread into Madrid.

It added that the Madrid government requested the declaration of a national state of emergency after being forced to evacuate more than 10,000 people from several towns and close several major roads in the southwestern part of the capital region.
