South Korea has unveiled a new anti-aging cosmetic treatment that relies on skin tissues obtained from deceased donors, which are processed in the laboratory to remove cells, leaving only a natural matrix rich in collagen and elastin known as the “extracellular matrix,” according to the New York Post.

This matrix is injected into the dermis to serve as a scaffold within which skin cells grow, helping to improve elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and tighten pores.

The treatment, known as Re2O, is marketed as more advanced than traditional therapies that merely stimulate collagen production, as it provides a ready-made structure for tissue regeneration.

Initial trials have shown satisfaction among some users, although opinions vary regarding the level of pain associated with the procedure.

Meanwhile, the treatment has sparked widespread ethical debate due to its reliance on human tissues for cosmetic purposes, raising questions about the appropriateness of its use compared to essential medical cases such as burns or reconstructive surgeries. Experts have also warned about the lack of sufficient data on its long-term safety, particularly since it has not yet received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, despite being offered in some clinics.
