United Nations: Global hunger rate declines for the third consecutive year - Sarmad

The “State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World” report, issued by the United Nations, revealed a decline in global hunger rates in 2025 for the third consecutive year.

The report clarified that the number of people suffering from hunger in 2025 ranged between 608 million and 696 million, representing 7.4% to 8.5% of the world’s population, compared to 673 million in 2024 (8.2%). Despite this improvement, the United Nations emphasized that food insecurity continues to worsen in rural areas and among women compared to men.

The African continent recorded the highest level of impact, becoming the region with the largest number of hungry people for the first time, with 309 million people (20% of its population), compared to 292 million in Asia (6%) and 32 million in Latin America and the Caribbean (4.8%). In contrast, Asia and Latin America experienced sustained improvement, while the rising trend of hunger rates in Africa halted.

The report projected that the number of hungry people would decline to between 510 million and 520 million by 2030, with Africans accounting for 56% of that figure. It also noted that approximately 2.1 billion people (25.8%) experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2025, a decrease of 86 million from 2024 and 135 million from 2020, with the gap remaining wider for rural populations and women.
