Environmental Authority: Commitment to transporting demolition waste to designated sites is an environmental, legal, and social responsibility - Sarmad
(KUNA) – The Public Authority for Environment (PAE) affirmed on Monday the importance of everyone’s commitment to refraining from dumping or leaving demolition and construction waste on roads, sidewalks, or in front of homes, and stressed the necessity of transporting such waste to designated sites, as this constitutes an environmental, legal, and social responsibility.
Sheikha Al-Ibrahim, Director of the Public Relations and Media Department at the PAE, told the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the Authority is closely monitoring the environmental impacts resulting from ongoing demolition works, which coincide with the campaign implemented by the Kuwait Municipality under the slogan “Kuwait is More Beautiful Without Encroachments” across various governorates of the country.
Al-Ibrahim clarified that the indiscriminate disposal of demolition waste constitutes a clear violation of Article 33 of the Environmental Protection Law, which stipulates that “it is prohibited to dump trash or waste, regardless of its type, except in designated containers or locations.”
She added that the harm caused by demolition waste is not limited to spoiling the urban appearance of areas; it may also obstruct traffic flow and endanger the safety of road users, in addition to its negative environmental impacts. This necessitates collective cooperation to curb such practices.
She noted that the Environmental Protection Law prescribes penalties for violators, with a fine of up to 500 Kuwaiti dinars for violating the provisions of the aforementioned article. Furthermore, violators are required to remove the effects of the violation, rectify the existing situation, and bear the associated costs and consequences, in accordance with established procedures.
Al-Ibrahim called on demolition contractors and builders to comply with approved environmental requirements and transport waste to designated sites, emphasizing the need for cooperation and adherence to sound practices to preserve the environment and the urban appearance of residential areas.
She reaffirmed that environmental protection is a shared responsibility between government entities and society, and that compliance with environmental regulations and laws contributes to maintaining the cleanliness of areas and enhancing the quality of life in the State of Kuwait.
