Egypt Reaffirms Full Support for Somalia’s Unity, Sovereignty, and Territorial Integrity - Sarmad
(KUNA) – Egypt reaffirmed today, Sunday, its full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia, as well as the preservation of its national institutions, while reiterating its rejection of any unilateral measures that undermine Somalia’s territorial unity or infringe upon its sovereignty.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press release that this position was expressed during a meeting held by Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Badr Abdelatty with his Somali counterpart, Abdulsalam Abdi, to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations and coordinate positions on African issues of common interest.
According to the statement, Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s condemnation of the illegal and unacceptable step taken by the northwestern region of Somalia, known as “Somaliland,” in opening a purported embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem. This act constitutes a blatant violation of international law and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, and directly interferes with the legal and historical status of the occupied city of Jerusalem.
Egypt reaffirmed its commitment to continuing its support for efforts to build Somali state institutions and strengthen their capacities in establishing security and stability, particularly in confronting the challenges of terrorism and extremism. It emphasized the importance of coordinating regional and international efforts to combat these phenomena and eliminate their root causes.
In this context, the Egyptian Foreign Minister requested that all efforts be continued to expedite the release of the kidnapped Egyptian sailors, ensure their safety, and encourage Somali authorities to engage further in resolving this crisis and working toward the release of Egyptian citizens.
He stressed Egypt’s support for international efforts aimed at achieving security, stability, and development in Somalia, emphasizing the importance of working with international partners to mobilize adequate and sustainable funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), enabling it to carry out its mandate as expected.
Abdelatty praised the growing momentum in Egyptian-Somali relations and the mutual commitment to developing bilateral ties across various economic, developmental, and investment fields.
In this regard, he highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen the strategic partnership and cooperation between the two countries in various sectors, particularly security, trade, infrastructure, electricity, renewable energy, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and agricultural and food processing, in order to meet the aspirations of both peoples and serve their shared interests. He stressed the necessity of further enhancing bilateral trade to bolster economic partnerships between the two sides.
The statement noted that the Somali Foreign Minister, for his part, praised Egypt’s continuous support for Somalia at the political, developmental, and security levels, as well as Egypt’s firm positions supporting Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He emphasized the commitment to continuing coordination and consultation with Egypt on various issues of common interest to advance shared benefits.
