Britain: Andy Burnham officially announced as new Labour Party leader succeeding Starmer - Sarmad

The British Labour Party officially announced on Friday that Andy Burnham, its leader, has been elected as the new leader of the ruling party, clearing the final hurdle before he assumes the office of Prime Minister next Monday.

Burnham began his first speech since his election by praising the level of support he received within the party. Appearing moved as he started his address, he said, “Thank you all. What a moment, and what support you have given me.”

He added, “All our affiliated trade unions, all our socialist societies, and our 379 Members of Parliament.”

Burnham affirmed that he was ready to assume leadership of the party.

Speaking about the reasons for the support he received, he said, “They all responded to the call from the people of Microfield, on behalf of the marginalized areas across the country, for the return of the Labour Party they once knew. Today, we answer that call; we will return to being that party once again.”

He said, “This is a day of pride for me and my family, and it is also an emotional day, but one I was prepared for.”

He added, “I am ready, ready to lead, and ready to build on the foundation laid by someone more than anyone else.”
