US Army Resumes Strikes on Iran - Sarmad
Multiple explosions rocked areas in southern Iran on Sunday, following new U.S. military strikes targeting Iranian missile and air defense systems, Axios reported, citing a U.S. official.
The official stated that the United States targeted small vessels belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps at two locations near the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, several explosions were heard east of the city of Bandar Abbas and in the coastal area of Qeshm in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to Fars News Agency.
More than ten projectiles also landed on the Iranian island of Qeshm. Hussein Amir Temuri, governor of Qeshm, told the official Iranian news agency (IRNA) that “between ten and eleven hostile projectiles fell on Qeshm Island since Sunday afternoon,” adding that “all targets were military” and no casualties were reported.
IRNA also noted that the “enemy” launched missiles toward the Iranian island of Qeshm.
These developments came after U.S. and Iranian forces exchanged intense attacks on Sunday using missiles and drones. Iran targeted U.S. facilities in several countries in the Gulf region, while Tehran again announced the closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz.
More than 300 targets
The U.S. military announced on Sunday the conclusion of the third round of military strikes against Iranian sites, revealing that its forces had carried out one of the broadest air and naval operations against targets inside Iran in recent days, encompassing more than 300 military sites, in response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated in a press release that the third round of strikes ended after targeting approximately 140 Iranian military sites using fighter jets launched from land and sea bases, as well as drones and warships firing precision munitions.
It further specified that the targets included missile and drone launch sites, naval facilities, ammunition depots, military warehouses, communication networks, and coastal surveillance and monitoring sites along Iran’s shores, as part of an operation aimed at reducing Iranian military capabilities used to target international navigation.
Conversely, Iranian media reported the death of one member of the Iranian Navy during U.S. strikes that targeted sites in the country’s south.
These were the latest strikes in a series of attacks and counterattacks, as Iran seeks to assert control over navigation through the strait.
This renewed wave of escalation casts doubt on the future of the temporary U.S.-Iran agreement signed by the two countries last month, which aimed to reopen the strait and end the conflict following additional negotiations over a 60-day period.
