Axios: Iran and Oman discuss a declaration guaranteeing full and free navigation in the middle passage of the Hormuz Strait - Sarmad

Axios reported that Qatari officials are participating in talks between Iran and Oman in Muscat regarding the Strait of Hormuz, according to a well-informed diplomat.

The website noted that Iran and Oman are discussing a declaration to ensure full and free navigation in the middle passage of the Strait of Hormuz.

On Friday, Donald Trump stated that “Iran asked us to continue the talks. We agreed to do so, but the United States made it unequivocally clear to them that the ceasefire has ended!”

However, the Iranian Foreign Ministry denied that Tehran had submitted any such request and announced that Ali Bagheri Kani would visit the Sultanate of Oman.

His office stated that he met on Saturday morning with his Omani counterpart, Badr Al Busaidi, to discuss the issue of the Strait of Hormuz.

“Violation” of the ceasefire

The United States launched strikes against Iran for two consecutive nights after accusing Tehran of targeting three commercial vessels in the strait.

The Iranian Ministry of Health reported that 17 Iranians were killed and 115 injured in the US strikes.

Meanwhile, Washington reimposed economic sanctions on Iranian oil, which had been suspended under a memorandum of understanding signed on June 17. Bagheri Kani described this move on Saturday as a “violation” of the ceasefire.

Bagheri Kani wrote that the US Treasury Secretary “is violating US commitments by breaching Article 9 of the memorandum of understanding,” which stipulates that “the United States will not impose any new sanctions, nor deploy additional forces to the region,” pending “the final agreement.”
