Saudi-Canadian statement: Iran's attacks in the Strait of Hormuz undermine diplomatic efforts - Sarmad

Saudi Arabia and Canada strongly condemned on Thursday Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, affirming that these unacceptable assaults constitute a threat to the security and safety of international navigation, to global energy supply security, and represent a serious violation of international law and norms.

In a joint statement following talks between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the Jeddah Peace Palace, the two countries stated that such actions would escalate regional tensions, undermine confidence-building efforts, and threaten ongoing diplomatic negotiations aimed at enhancing security and stability in the region. They also praised the efforts undertaken by Pakistan and Qatar to reach an agreement, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The two countries emphasized the importance of restoring safe and unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law, and returning it to its normal status as it existed before February 28.

On the Palestinian issue, both sides stressed the importance of delivering humanitarian aid safely, urgently, and without obstacles, protecting civilians, and making efforts to create the necessary conditions for achieving lasting peace. They reaffirmed their support for the two-state solution and emphasized the importance of preserving the Palestinian people’s right to establish their independent state. The Saudi side welcomed Canada’s recognition of the State of Palestine.

The Saudi Crown Prince and the Canadian Prime Minister witnessed the signing ceremony for several bilateral memoranda of understanding.
