U.S. Supreme Court Upholds 'Birthright Citizenship' and Overturns Trump's Order - Sarmad

(KUNA) — The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday to uphold the principle of birthright citizenship, thereby nullifying an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on his first day in office that sought to restrict automatic U.S. citizenship for children born on American soil.

In its ruling, the Supreme Court affirmed, with five justices in favor and four dissenting, the longstanding constitutional principle that “children born in the United States are citizens from birth.” In the weeks preceding the Court’s consideration of the case, the U.S. president launched a sharp attack on the nation’s highest judicial body, predicting that the ruling would go against his efforts to limit automatic citizenship for certain children born within the United States.

Trump told reporters last May that “this Supreme Court decision is of great importance... The ruling is likely to go against me, as it seems they are inclined to do so... And frankly, I am not satisfied with some of the decisions.”
