Iraqi Foreign Minister Fawzi Hussein announced that current conditions point to the possibility of renewed war in the region, revealing that his country has lost approximately $60 billion due to the halt of oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz.
The minister told Al Jazeera on Saturday that Iraq had resumed exporting its oil through the strait following understandings reached with Washington and Tehran, while noting that the United States had formally requested the closure of all border crossings with Iran, except for two.
Domestically, the minister stressed the “necessity of monopolizing weapons in the hands of the state through dialogue, not armed confrontation,” announcing that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had reached understandings with four factions. The “Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq” and “Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada” movements agreed to regulate their weapons, while negotiations remain ongoing with “Harakat al-Nujaba” and “Kata’ib Hezbollah.”
Hussein pointed to the presence of ISIS groups on the Syrian side of the border with Iraq, confirming that a quadrilateral committee comprising Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Turkey is working to combat the group in Syria.
